Artist's Description
This portrait is a stunning restoration of a historical photograph taken in 1886 by C.S. Fly, depicting Geronimo, one of the most legendary and influential Native American leaders of all time. Geronimo was born in 1829 into the Bedonkohe band of the Apache tribe in present-day Arizona. He became a renowned warrior and medicine man who led his people in resisting the encroachment of Mexican and American settlers on their lands for decades. He was known for his courage, cunning, and spiritual power, as well as his skill in guerrilla warfare. He surrendered to the US Army in 1886 after a long and bloody campaign and spent the rest of his life as a prisoner of war. He died in 1909 at Fort Sill, Oklahoma.
Geronimo had a tragic family history. He married a woman named Alope when he was 17 and had three children with her. In 1851, while he was away trading with another tribe, a group of Mexican soldiers attacked his camp and killed his mother, wife, and children1. He vowed revenge and...
